Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions Available

The Bioelectronics Laboratory at Columbia University (www.bioee.ee.columbia.edu) seeks to hire several postdoctoral fellows to work on new projects funded by the BRAIN Initiative, both by NIH and DARPA.  Projects involve the use of advanced electronic technologies, specifically, complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technologies to interface to the brain.   Techniques include photoacoustics, ultrasound, highly scaled electrophysiology, and implanted optoelectronic devices.  Confirmation is provided with advanced microscopy, including confocal and two-photon. In all cases, we are designing and building new interface devices in deeply scaled and flexible form factors and performing in vivo experiments in the mouse model.  At least one project involves translating devices to non-human primates and eventually to humans.  The work in our group involves collaboration with some of the world’s leading neuroscience groups as well as connections with industrial partners in the semiconductor and medical electronics industry.

Successful postdoctoral fellows will come from either an electronics background, with an interest in learning more about neuroscience, or a neuroscience background, with an interest in working with cutting-edge, experimental technologies for interfacing to the BRAIN. Experience in mouse-model electrophysiology, optical microscopy, integrated circuit design, or microfabrication is a plus.

Postdoctoral positions will be for at least two years with an option for an additional year.  We offer a very competitive salary and housing assistance.

Interested candidates should send their CV and the names of three references to Prof. Ken Shepard (shepard@ee.columbia.edu).

Doctoral Students

I generally take M. S./Ph. D. students for Fall admission only who apply to either electrical engineering or biomedical engineering. (I review applications in both of these departments.) I will also consider students from other departments, although I will not be reviewing applications there. Students who wish to make sure I review their application are welcome to contact me at shepard@ee.columbia.edu. If you are applying to a department other than EE or BME, you must contact me or I will not review your application. Admission deadline is December 15.
